DNA Unit

The Kern County Probation Department's DNA Unit was formed to bring the Department into compliance with Proposition 69, The DNA Fingerprint, Unsolved Crime and Innocence Protection Act, which took effect on November 2, 2004, uses a non-medical procedure to collect DNA samples from adult and juvenile offenders. The DNA sample is coded for submission into a state and nation-wide databank, and later is compared to evidence samples collected from crime scenes. As can be inferred from the title of the Act, the samples have been instrumental in holding the guilty responsible for their crimes, and in freeing the innocent from incarceration.
